CEI remediated soil impacted by former MGP operations using a combination of open surface excavation and in-situ soil stabilization via auger mixing of soil to approximately 12’ and 28’ deep. The project also included remediation of an on-site Beach Thorofare, where a temporary bulkhead steel sheet pile was constructed.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Installation of ~12,600 sf of steel sheeting for temporary bulkhead and ~22,000 square foot of steel sheeting for permanent bulkhead
  • Excavation and disposal of ~58,000 tons of non-hazardous MGP impacted soil and subsurface structures
  • Demolition and removal of 1,200 CY of concrete gas holders and 2 underground storage tanks
  • In-situ soil stabilization via auger mixing of 104,000 CY of soils
  • In-situ soil stabilization along active building for structure support and ISS to 58’ bgs for shoring and water cutoff for future cofferdam work along adjacent property
  • Installation of 360 LF of 50’-60’ long sheet piles including installation into wet ISS columns
  • Furnish and installation of ~8,000 SY and 10,000 SY of demarcation and subgrade separation non-woven geotextile fabric, 12,000 tons of certified clean fill soil material and 5,000 tons of gravel stone
  • Manage truck traffic through a residential/commercial neighborhood to ensure pedestrian and vehicular traffic safety
  • Restoration of public roadway with full depth asphalt, curb, sidewalk, and guardrail

Superfund Remediation

CEI implemented the ROD cleanup goals for the 2nd phase of the Operable Unit-2 Horseshoe Road Drum Dump Site and the Atlantic Resources Corporation Superfund site. This phase of work was contracted by the PRP Group with on-site monitoring by both USEPA and USACE.

Wetlands and Flood Plain Recreation

CEI was retained to provide environmental construction services for the creation of a flood plain and wetlands mitigation area. This project received the 2022 NJ Future Smart Growth Award for converting a former brownfield site into a park space that provides recreational opportunities and reduces flood risk.

IRM Remediation

CEI implemented the Phase II IRM to facilitate the remediation of chromium impacted groundwater. Work included connecting existing extraction wells to a new groundwater treatment system and connecting existing injection wells to a new injection system.

Bulkhead Replacement

CEI implemented the removal and replacement of approximately 870 lineal feet of existing bulkhead along the Gowanus Canal and performed uplands soil remediation at multiple locations on this former inner-city MGP site.

MGP Remediation

CEI remediated a former MGP site located at field operations center for an electric utility company. Work included sheeting installation, excavating and disposal of MGP contaminated soil, ISS soil mixing, construction of a clean corridor for the relocation of natural gas pipelines and site restoration.

Sediment Remediation

CEI was retained to implement sediment remediation and site containment activities at a site contaminated with high levels of solvents. The scope of work included removal of RCRA hazardous, land disposal restricted TCE and PCE contaminated soil and sediment from a public waterway and surrounding areas and installation of vertical containment and horizontal cap.
